T.S. ELIOT''s "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" Part II

Cats led the way to be heard to most of the students with great joy! Forms of Art were connected and enjoyed! The music videos we watched on you tube, by the musical "Cats", were great and showed how Art can really trasform all things into greatness! Here are two of Eliot's poems in both English and Greek, taken by the English-Greek Book and the videos taken by the wonderful performance "Cats"!

The Song of the Jellicles Jellicle Cats come out to-night Jellicle Cats come one come all: The Jellicle Moon is shining bright - Jellicles come to the Jellicle Ball. Jellicle Cats are black and white, Jellicle Cats are rather small; Jellicle Cats are merry and bright, And pleasant to hear when they caterwaul. Jellicle Cats have cheerful faces, Jellicle Cats have bright black eyes; They like to practise their airs and graces And wait for the Jellicle Moon to rise. Jellicle Cats develop slowly, Jellicle Cats are not too big; Jellicle Cats are roly-poly, They know how to dance a gavotte and a jig. Until the Jellicle Moon appears They make their toilette and take their repose: Jellicle Cats wash behind their ears, Jellicle dry between their toes. Jellicle Cats are white and black, Jellicle Cats are of moderate size; Jellicle Cats jump like a jumping-jack, Jellicle Cats have moonlit eyes. They're quiet enough in the morning hours, They're quiet enough in the afternoon, Reserving their terpsichorean powers To dance by the light of the Jellicle Moon. Jellicle Cats are black and white, Jellicle Cats (as I said) are small; If it happends to be a stormy night They will practise a caper or two in the hall. Τραγούδι για τις γουργουρίτσες Οι γουργουρίτσες οι μικρές απόψε βγαίνουν χαρούμενες δυο δυο, όλες, γιατί γουργουροφέγγαρο τους φέγγει και πηγαίνουν στην όμορφη τη Γουργουρογιορτή Οι γουργουρίτσες ειν' ασπρόμαυρα ντυμένες οι γουργουρίτσες είναι φίνες και μικρές οι γουργουρίτσες  είναι τρισευτυχισμένες κι έχουν σοπράνο αξιολάτρευτες φωνές. Οι γουργουρίτσες έχουν εύθυμα μουτράκια Οι γουργουρίτσες έχουν έξυπνα ματάκια ώσπου να βγει το γουργουροφεγγάρι προβάρουνε φιγούρες όλο χάρη.  Οι γουργουρίτσες είναι μικροκαμωμένες Οι γουργουρίτσες αναπτύσσονται αργά Οι γουργουρίτσες είναι ονειροπαρμένες μα την γκαβότα τη χορεύουνε γοργά. Ώσπου να βγει το γουργουροφεγγάρι οι γουργουρίτσες καλλωπίζονται με χάρη πλένονται πίσω απο τ' αυτιά να χαλαρώσουν και τα νυχάκια τους φυσούν για να στεγνώσουν. Οι γουργουρίτσες είναι σικ πάντα ντυμένες έχουν φερσίματα και λάμψη αστεριού οι γουργουρίτσες είναι καλογυμνασμένες οι γουργουρίτσες έχουν ματια φεγγαριού. Το πρωινό συνήθως όλο ησυχάζουν ν' αναπαυτούνε και τ' απόγευμα κοιτάζουν κι η Τερψιχόρη τις ξυπνάει με τη σκέψη μαζί τους στο φεγγάρι να χορέψει. Οι γουργουρίτσες είναι ασπρόμαυρα ντυμένες οι γουργουρίτσες (καθώς είπα) είναι μικρές σαν τύχει να ναι βραδιές συννεφιασμένες στο χωλ ασκούνται σε φιγούρες και στροφές. Μα πάντα , μέρα που έχει ζέστη και λιακάδα, άνεργη ολη χουζουρεύει η ομάδα, οι γουργουρίτσες τις δυνάμεις τους φυλάνε στη γουργουρονυχτιά φρέσκες να πάνε.

Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer were a very notorious couple  of cats. As knockabout clown, quick-change comedians, tight-rope  walkers and acrobats They had extensive reputation. They made their home in  Victoria Grove-- That was merely their centre of operation, for they were  incurably given to rove. They were very well know in Cornwall Gardens, in Launceston  Place and in Kensington Square-- They had really a little more reputation than a couple of  cats can very well bear. If the area window was found ajar And the basement looked like a field of war, If a tile or two came loose on the roof, Which presently ceased to be waterproof, If the drawers were pulled out from the bedroom chests, And you couldn't find one of your winter vests, Or after supper one of the girls Suddenly missed her Woolworth pearls: Then the family would say: "It's that horrible cat! It was Mungojerrie--or Rumpelteazer!"-- And most of the time  they left it at that. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer had a very unusual gift of the  gab. They were highly efficient cat-burglars as well, and  remarkably smart at smash-and-grab. They made their home in Victoria Grove. They had no regular  occupation. They were plausible fellows, and liked to engage a friendly  policeman in conversation. When the family assembled for Sunday dinner, With their minds made up that they wouldn't get thinner On Argentine joint, potatoes and greens, And the cook would appear from behind the scenes And say in a voice that was broken with sorrow: "I'm afraid you must wait and have dinner tomorrow! For the joint has gone from the oven-like that!" Then the family would say: "It's that horrible cat! It was Mungojerrie--or Rumpelteazer!"-- And most of the time  they left it at that. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer had a wonderful way of working  together. And some of the time you would say it was luck, and some of  the time you would say it was weather. They would go through the house like a hurricane, and no sober  person could take his oath Was it Mungojerrie--or Rumpelteazer? or could you have sworn  that it mightn't be both? And when you heard a dining-room smash Or up from the pantry there came a loud crash Or down from the library came a loud ping From a vase which was commonly said to be Ming-- Then the family would say: "Now which was which cat? It was Mungojerrie! AND Rumpelteazer!"-- And there's nothing  at all to be done about that!

O Μπελάς κι o Ρουμποτύρης, διάσημο ζευγάρι γάτες, ήταν κλόουν γκαφατζήδες, κωμικοί και ακροβάτες. Φημισμένοι, είχαν έδρα την Πλατεία Βικτωρίας έδρα μόνο, γιατί ήταν οπαδοί της φασαρίας. Κένσιγκτον, Κόρνγουολ Γκάρντεν, Λόνστον Πλέις*, στην απάτη, φήμη είχαν σαν πενήντα, κι όχι μόνο σαν δυο γάτοι. Αν στο σπίτι το φεγγίτη ανοιχτό τον βρεις να στάζει, το κελάρι* αν πεις πως μάλλον με πεδίο μάχης μοιάζει, αν στη στέγη καταλάβεις να ’χει φύγει κεραμίδι, γιατί γίνονται από κάτω όλοι οι ένοικοι μουσκίδι, αν προσέξεις να ’ναι χάμω πεταμένο το συρτάρι, και το μάλλινο γιλέκο να σου τό ’χει κάποιος πάρει, ή μετά το δείπνο πάλι, αν καμιά απ’ τις κοπέλες έχει χάσει αιφνιδίως το κολιέ της με τις πέρλες, θα πουν όλοι: «Αυτές οι γάτες! Πο, πο, πο! Πανάθεμά τες! Ο Μπελάς να ’ταν, ή μήπως ο φτωχός ο Ρουμποτύρης; Μήπως ήτανε κι οι δυο τους; Ποιον να πιάσεις, ποιον να δείρεις;» Ο Μπελάς κι ο Ρουμποτύρης, ασυνήθιστο ντουέτο Στις κλοπές και στις απάτες μεγαλέιο ήταν σκέτο Ριφιφήδες ήταν πρώτοι και μαστόροι μπουκαδόροι Την Πλατεία είχαν στέκι σα σωστοί κομπιναδόροι Ανεπάγγελτοι κι οι δύο, σταθερή δεν είχαν θέση Με τους αστυνόμους όμως διατηρούσαν καλή σχέση Κυριακή όταν καθίσει η φαμίλια στο τραπέζι σοβαρή, γιατί κανένας με το γεύμα του δεν παίζει, κι ενώ όλοι περιμένουν το ψητό και τη σαλάτα, η μαγείρισσα θα έρθει, ξαφνικά, με άδεια πιάτα. Και θα πει θορυβημένη, θυμωμένη, ντροπιασμένη: «Η όρεξή σας πρέπει μάλλον για πολύ να περιμένει! Από μέσ’ από το φούρνο έκανε φτερά το μπούτι Θα μου στρίψει! Επιτέλους, μα τι γάτοι είναι τούτοι;» Κι όλοι λένε: «Αυτές οι γάτες! Πο, πο, πο! Πανάθεμά τες! Ο Μπελάς να ’ταν, ή μήπως ο φτωχός ο Ρουμποτύρης; Μήπως ήτανε κι οι δυο τους; Ποιον να πιάσεις, ποιον να δείρεις;» Ο Μπελάς κι ο Ρουμποτύρης ήταν Γάτοι-συνεργάτοι Πότε ήταν τυχεράκιες, πότε άτυχοι κομμάτι. Διασχίζανε το σπίτι, δεν τους πρόφταινε το μάτι Ποιος να ήταν απ’ τους δύο;Είδες κάποιον; Είδες κάτι; Ο Μπελάς να ‘ταν, ή μήπως ο μπατίρης Ρουμποτύρης; Μήπως ήτανε κι οι δύο; Ποιόν να πιάσεις, ποιόν να δείρεις; Όταν θόρυβο ακούσεις, από την τραπεζαρία, γυαλικά κράτς μπουμ! να πέφτουν με κακό και φασαρία, όταν δεις και το ντουλάπι κατσαρόλια να πετάει, και το βάζο Μινγκ στη σάλα μ’ ένα πίνγκ! απλά να σπάει, θα πουν όλοι τρομαγμένοι: «Είναι πάλι οι γάτοι εκείνοι! Ο Μπελάς κι ο Ρουμποτύρης!» Όμως τι μπορεί να γίνει;
